The Foundation / Pathways Programme :
This programme provides the valuable opportunity for international students to prepare for successful entry to certificate and degree college / university courses. Students are trained intensively in English for Academic Purposes (EAP) as well as the culture and conventions needed to successfully study at a third level institute.
The course aims to take learners from an entry level of B1 Intermediate and bring them to an exit level of C1 Advanced, which will be measured by a recognised competency exam (e.g. IELTS Academic or TOEFL). The course affords every opportunity to learners to build strong English for General Academic Purposes (EAP) skills which will be transferable to the Further and Higher Education environments.
By the end of the course, learners will be able to:
- Demonstrate a strong command of English for Academic Purposes
- Write more effectively and accurately in a wide range of academic settings and follow the conventions of academic writing
- Read confidently and critically and use information sources effectively
- Communicate effectively and play a constructive and appropriate part in a variety of oral exchanges
- Follow and participate in tutorial, seminars and discussions
- Approach academic listening tasks (lectures, seminars and discussions) with confidence
- Take organised, coherent notes from listening input.
- Manage everyday situations on and off campus in an English-speaking environment
What are the entry requirements for the CEC Foundation programme?
4.5 IELTS / 450 TOEFL / 600 TOEIC
Second level / High school certificate successfully completed in country of origin.
Why do the Foundation Programme at CEC?
International students who do not have the requirements for direct entry to a degree programme can do the Foundation Programme at CEC and on achieving the necessary results, they will be guaranteed a place in a reputable third level college or university.
At CEC, we also offer a pre-foundation course designed to bring students up to the required 4.5 IELTS (or 600 TOEIC) standard.

What is the duration of the Foundation Programme?
From one term (3 months) to three terms depending on the student’s command of the English language.
Guideline : a student at intermediate level would be advised to do the nine month programme (3 terms)
A working week consists of a full-time programme + assessments and projects to be completed. International students are also entitled to work in a part time job of up to 20 hours per week.
When can you start?
The terms are as follows :
- Term 1 : September – December
- Term 2 : January – March
- Term 3 : April – June
Transferring to third level course :
These courses are designed for students who need to improve their English language and study skills before commencing an undergraduate or postgraduate degree or PhD at an Irish University. On successful completion of these courses, students will be recommended for study on their chosen degree at 3rd level institutions
